BENGALURU — The Karnataka government has officially cleared the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to host 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, ending months of speculation regarding the venue’s safety. The decision comes after a detailed review of the stadium’s security protocols following a tragic stampede that occurred during the team’s maiden title celebrations last year.

The 19th edition of the IPL is set to kick off on March 28, 2026, with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad in the tournament opener.

Expert Committee Gives Green Light

The formal approval was granted following a high-level meeting chaired by Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwar. An Expert Committee, led by Bengaluru Police Commissioner Sreemant Kumar Singh, presented a comprehensive report on the stadium’s preparedness, crowd management systems, and compliance with new safety mandates.

“Based on the recommendations of the Expert Committee and after reviewing the arrangements in detail, the Hon’ble Home Minister has formally accorded approval,” stated KSCA spokesperson Vinay Mruthyunjaya. The association expressed deep gratitude to the state administration for their guidance in ensuring the “iconic” venue could once again welcome fans.

Major Events and Venue Split

Beyond the opening match, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is confirmed to host two other major pre-season events:

  • RCB Unboxing Event: The annual fan-centric event where the team unveils its new jersey and squad.

  • IPL 2026 Opening Ceremony: A star-studded event preceding the first ball of the season.

In a slight change to their home schedule, RCB previously announced they will play five of their seven home matches in Bengaluru. The remaining two “home” fixtures will be moved to the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur, a move likely intended to manage the high demand and security load at the Bengaluru facility.

Building on Success

The atmosphere in Bengaluru is already electric, coming off the back of RCB’s historic first title win. While the 2025 victory was marred by the post-match crowd incidents, the new 2026 security framework is designed to prevent a recurrence, allowing the “12th Man Army” to support the defending champions in a safer environment.
