Chennai: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has imposed penalties on two prominent players following disciplinary breaches during the recent clash between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Delhi Capitals batter Nitish Rana has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point after an on-field altercation with the fourth umpire. The incident unfolded in the closing stages of the innings when a request by teammate Tristan Stubbs to change his sweat-soaked gloves was denied, triggering visible frustration.
Rana, who was dismissed shortly after, confronted the official in a heated exchange. According to the IPL’s statement, he breached the Code of Conduct relating to the use of inappropriate language during a match. The cricketer admitted to the offence and accepted the punishment without contest.
Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad, captain of Chennai Super Kings, was fined ₹12 lakh for his team’s slow over-rate during the same match. As it was the franchise’s first such offence this season, the penalty falls under the league’s minimum over-rate regulations.
Despite the disciplinary issues, Chennai Super Kings secured a comfortable 23-run victory over Delhi Capitals, registering their first win of the season.
The IPL has reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding the spirit of the game, with strict action against violations of its code.
