Gurugram-Delhi commute set for 15-minute reality as major corridors go signal-free

New Delhi: The daily struggle of navigating the congested arteries between Gurugram and Delhi is nearing a historic end as the Central Government unveils a massive plan to transform three major highway corridors into signal-free zones. This ambitious infrastructure overhaul, which includes the high-traffic Mehrauli-Gurugram (MG) Road, is projected to slash peak-hour travel times from over an hour to just 15 minutes. By removing chronic bottlenecks, the project aims to fundamentally reshape the economy and lifestyle of the National Capital Region (NCR).

Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Harsh Malhotra, confirmed in the Lok Sabha that critical intersections such as Ashram-Badarpur and Mehrauli-Gurugram will undergo extensive upgrades, including the construction of multiple flyovers and advanced interchanges. Malhotra emphasized that the transition to a signal-free stretch is a priority for the government to ensure seamless mobility and significantly reduce the current one-and-a-half-hour commute that has long hampered regional productivity.

Complementing Delhi’s efforts, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to take over the 5.5-km MG Road stretch from IFFCO Chowk to the Delhi border to develop it as a “Model Road.” The plan includes a sophisticated multi-level interchange or cloverleaf at IFFCO Chowk, effectively eliminating red lights. This revamp is strategically aligned with the arrival of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and expanded Metro lines, turning IFFCO Chowk into a premier transit hub. Real estate experts anticipate this connectivity will trigger a rental boom in Gurugram as professionals from South and Central Delhi relocate to capitalize on the 15-minute commute, effectively merging the two cities into a single, fluid urban corridor.
