New Delhi— The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared the proposal to submit India’s bid for hosting the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2030. The decision, taken on the recommendation of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, also includes approval for signing the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) and providing the necessary guarantees from concerned ministries and departments. The Cabinet has further sanctioned grant-in-aid support to the Gujarat government if India’s bid is accepted.
If successful, India will welcome athletes from 72 nations. The Games are expected to draw not only competitors but also coaches, technical officials, tourists, and media personnel, giving a significant boost to local businesses and the hospitality sector.
Ahmedabad has been pitched as the ideal host city, with world-class infrastructure, advanced training facilities, and a vibrant sports culture. The Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium, has already proven its capabilities by hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final.
Officials highlighted that hosting CWG 2030 will extend benefits beyond sports. The event is expected to drive tourism, create jobs, and open new opportunities in sports science, event operations, logistics, broadcasting, IT, and communications. It is also seen as a chance to inspire millions of young athletes and encourage greater participation in sports across the country.
The government believes that hosting such a prestigious global sporting event will boost national pride, foster unity, and strengthen India’s profile as a sporting powerhouse on the international stage.
