GURDASPUR: A high-alert has been sounded across Punjab following the tragic death of two police personnel at the Adiyan police check-post near the international border. On Monday, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced an ex-gratia of ₹1 crore each for the families of the deceased, identifying them as ASI Gurnam Singh and Punjab Home Guard jawan Ashok Kumar.

The incident, which initially appeared to be a mysterious shooting, has taken a more serious turn with an extremist group reportedly claiming responsibility, prompting the state government to intensify security and deepen the investigation.

The Incident and Claims of Responsibility

The two officials were found dead under suspicious circumstances with gunshot wounds at their post under the Dorangla police station’s jurisdiction. Shortly after the bodies were discovered, an organization calling itself Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindostan reportedly shared a post on social media claiming responsibility for the killings.

The alleged post contained alarming threats, including:

  • Targeting Uniformed Personnel: The group threatened to continue and intensify attacks against Indian government officials in uniform.

  • Ultimatum to Security Forces: The message urged personnel in the Army, Punjab Police, and BSF to resign, warning that if they did not, their homes would also be targeted.

  • Verification Status: While the post has gone viral, official intelligence agencies and media outlets like PTC News have not yet independently verified the authenticity of the group or the claim.

State Response and Investigation

The Punjab Police, in coordination with central intelligence agencies, is conducting an in-depth probe into the shooting. While the “suicide” angle was initially considered, the recovery of empty shells and the subsequent terror claim have shifted the focus toward a targeted attack or infiltration-related incident.

Chief Minister Mann reiterated that the safety of Punjab remains a top priority and that the state will not be intimidated by such threats. “The sacrifice of our brave jawans will not go in vain. We are committed to maintaining peace and will deal with any anti-national elements with an iron hand,” he stated. Security has been significantly beefed up at all border check-posts and sensitive government installations across the state.
