Sunil Jakhar Urges PM Modi for Urgent Central Relief to Tackle Punjab Flood Crisis

Chandigarh: Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking immediate central assistance to help the state combat the severe flooding that has wreaked havoc over the past week.

In his letter, Jakhar described the situation as a “catastrophic natural disaster” that has endangered lives, displaced thousands, and inflicted heavy damage on Punjab’s agricultural sector. He noted that relentless rainfall in recent days, combined with excessive precipitation in the hilly regions, has triggered widespread flooding across several districts.

According to Jakhar, areas along the Pakistan border—including Bhoa, Fazilka, and Kapurthala—are among the worst affected. He warned that the Meteorological Department’s forecast of more rainfall in the coming days could further aggravate the crisis.

Highlighting the scale of the damage, Jakhar said that large sections of Punjab’s population have been marooned, with thousands of acres of crops—critical for both the state’s economy and India’s food security—lying submerged. While acknowledging the Central Government’s ongoing support through the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), he stressed that the magnitude of the calamity required “additional and urgent intervention.”

Jakhar appealed to the Prime Minister to immediately deploy central assessment teams to evaluate the ground reality and to announce a special relief package aimed at the urgent needs of affected families and the restoration of normalcy.

“Punjab’s strategic role as a border state and its importance in ensuring national food security makes this intervention vital,” Jakhar wrote, expressing confidence in the Prime Minister’s leadership to act swiftly and decisively.

He added that timely support from the Centre would provide much-needed relief to thousands of Punjabis grappling with the crisis and help the state recover at the earliest.
