Sri Akal Takht Sahib Summons Guru Nanak Dev University VC Over Remarks on Sikh Identity

Amritsar: Sri Akal Takht Sahib has issued a formal summons to the Vice Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, directing him to present his clarification within 15 days over alleged controversial remarks concerning the distinct identity of Sikhs. The directive follows a series of complaints from Sikh organisations, students, and members of the Sangat, some of which were accompanied by a video reel reportedly showing the VC making inappropriate references to Gurmat principles.

Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj emphasized that the unique identity and principles of the Sikh community are divine gifts bestowed by the Gurus and must never be undermined. He noted that whenever such matters arise, the Takht Sahib has consistently invited individuals to explain their stance before the Panth.

Addressing recent debates surrounding the formation of a new Akali Dal faction, the Jathedar clarified that the current discord reflects a tussle between groups rather than a conflict within the Panth itself. Referring to the December 2, 2024, Hukamnama, he reiterated that its essence was to foster unity among all Sikh factions for the greater good, cautioning against exploiting Akal Takht Sahib’s name for political advantage.

“The drafting of Hukamnamas is the collective responsibility of the five Singh Sahibs, guided solely by Gurmat. No single individual dictates these decisions,” he asserted, adding that recent political manoeuvres have risked diminishing the sanctity of the Takht.

The Jathedar also addressed growing concerns over the misuse of Artificial Intelligence to alter visuals of sacred sites. He called for stringent government action and the introduction of preventive measures, particularly to safeguard iconic places such as Sachkhand Sri Darbar Sahib. “Tampering with the images or structure of religious sites is unacceptable. The Khalsa Panth will always stand ready to defend its heritage and values,” he warned.
