Phagwara (Punjab): Tension gripped parts of Phagwara on Monday morning after unidentified assailants fired at a popular sweets shop on Hoshiarpur Road, just hours before Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann was expected to visit the town.
According to police, the firing took place at around 6:45 am when three persons arrived on a scooter and opened fire at the front of Sudhir Sweets. Several bullets struck the shop’s entrance, damaging glass doors and windows. Fortunately, no one was hurt, even though the owner and four employees were present inside at the time.
The attackers fled immediately after the incident. During a preliminary search of the area, police recovered multiple empty cartridges, suspected to be from a 9mm firearm.
Phagwara Superintendent of Police Madhvi Sharma reached the spot soon after the incident to assess the situation. Police teams have launched an investigation and are scanning CCTV footage from nearby establishments to identify the suspects and track their escape route.
Former Union Minister and local MLA Som Parkash also visited the shop, terming the incident disturbing and raising concerns about public safety. He said such acts were creating fear among residents and urged authorities to take swift and firm action against those involved.
The firing occurred shortly before Chief Minister Mann’s scheduled visit to Phagwara for an event at Lovely Professional University. However, officials have stated that, at this stage, there is no clear evidence linking the attack to the Chief Minister’s programme.
A case has been registered in connection with the incident, and security arrangements across the city have been tightened as investigations continue.
