Tarn Taran: A shopkeeper was shot dead in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district after two bike-borne assailants opened fire inside his grocery shop on Monday afternoon. The attackers fired directly at 47-year-old Daljit Singh, killing him on the spot. Police said the incident occurred while the victim’s family was away in Amritsar to attend a wedding, and only his 18-year-old son was present at the shop.

According to officials, the suspects entered the shop with the intention of robbery. Daljit Singh reportedly handed over cash from the register, but an argument broke out, after which one of the assailants fired at him. He was shot three times in the chest.

Residents rushed the victim to a private hospital in Tarn Taran, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police have sent the body for post-mortem and registered a case.

Daljit Singh’s father had previously served as the sarpanch of Bhullar village. The deceased leaves behind his wife and two sons. One of his sons was preparing to move abroad next month and had already secured his visa. The family told police they had never received any threats or extortion calls.

Tarn Taran DSP Sukhbir Singh said the attackers fled immediately after the shooting. “Daljit Singh was inside his shop when two unidentified men on a motorcycle fired at him. He died on the spot. CCTV footage is being examined, and the accused will be arrested soon,” he said.
