AMRITSAR — The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has officially terminated the services of Giani Raghbir Singh from the esteemed position of Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple). This significant decision was reached during an emergency interim committee meeting held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, following a period of internal scrutiny and controversy surrounding the religious official’s conduct.
SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami confirmed the termination, stating that the action was necessitated by “serious allegations” that surfaced against Giani Raghbir Singh. While specific details of the charges were not fully disclosed, the SGPC leadership asserted that the former Head Granthi’s activities were detrimental to the reputation of the apex Sikh body and had brought considerable disrepute to the religious institution. The move is seen as a stern measure by the SGPC to maintain the sanctity of the high offices associated with the Golden Temple.
According to President Dhami, Giani Raghbir Singh was previously granted a 72-hour window to provide evidence and a formal explanation regarding a specific matter under investigation. However, the former Head Granthi failed to submit any substantial proof or justification within the stipulated time frame. This lack of response led the committee to conclude that there was a manifest disregard for established administrative rules and the religious maryada (code of conduct) that governs the services at Sri Harmandir Sahib.
The SGPC has reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and religious discipline among its staff and high-ranking officials. President Dhami emphasized that negligence towards the code of conduct would not be tolerated, regardless of the individual’s rank. As the search for a successor begins, the interim committee has directed the senior management to ensure that the daily religious ceremonies and duties at the Golden Temple continue without interruption, adhering strictly to the traditional protocols of the Khalsa Panth.
