Chandigarh: The first month of 2026 is turning out to be holiday-heavy in Punjab, offering residents another opportunity for an extended break. After schools remained closed until January 14 and holidays around Lohri, the state is set to observe one more official holiday later this month.
As per the Punjab government’s official holiday calendar for 2026, January 23 will be observed as a reserved holiday on the occasion of Basant Panchami and the birth anniversary of Satguru Ram Singh Ji. The date falls on a Friday, setting the stage for a long weekend.
Most government employees will get additional time off on Saturday and Sunday following the holiday. This will be followed by a nationwide holiday on January 26, when Republic Day is celebrated across the country.
With January 23 and January 26 declared as holidays, the month will include four holidays in total, making it convenient for people to plan short trips or family engagements in advance. Schools, colleges and government offices across Punjab are expected to remain closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during this period, in line with the holiday schedule.
The clustering of holidays has added to the festive and relaxed mood in the state as January draws to a close.
