Chandigarh: Punjab will observe a government holiday on September 22 to mark Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti. On this day, all government offices, schools, and colleges, both public and private, will remain closed. The state government has issued a notification warning that violations of the holiday rules will result in strict action, as this holiday is part of the official annual calendar. The festive season across India will also begin from September 22, and October will have three holidays, including Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra on October 2, Valmiki Jayanti on October 7, and Diwali on October 20.

Maharaja Agrasen was a prominent ancient Indian ruler, remembered primarily among the Agrasen Vaishya community. He is considered a symbol of equality, justice, and public service, and historical accounts suggest that he introduced policies benefiting both traders and the common people. By fostering economic fairness and social equality, he ensured that his kingdom prospered, establishing social structures and market centers to boost trade and civic life.

He also implemented rules to assist the poor, struggling traders, and those in need, guided by his principle of “progress of society through equality and cooperation.” Today, the Vaishya community and other groups commemorate his legacy through Agraseni committees and celebrations. Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti is observed every year on September 22 with various social, cultural, and religious programs across Punjab, honoring his contributions to equality, economic empowerment, and public welfare.
