Amritsar (Punjab): In a major intelligence-based operation aimed at strengthening Punjab’s security framework under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Amritsar Rural Police has busted a cross-border smuggling and terror module. Two brothers were arrested, and an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along with two mobile phones was recovered, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Akashdeep Singh alias Akash and Yuvraj Singh, both residents of Ranike village in Amritsar. Police also impounded the motorcycle allegedly used by them to facilitate the crime.

DGP Yadav said that initial investigation suggests the duo had been in contact with a Pakistan-based handler, indicating strong cross-border links behind the conspiracy. He added that further investigation is underway to trace the network’s forward and backward connections.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Border Range Sandeep Goel said the two brothers were plotting a terror attack aimed at disturbing peace and harmony in the border region. He added that investigators are interrogating the accused to identify their handler and verify the involvement of additional module members.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Suhail Qasim Mir said the Special Cell acted promptly on intelligence inputs, apprehended the suspects and recovered the IED. Forensic teams were called to the spot and safely disposed of the explosive device.

A case (FIR No. 386 dated 25/11/2025) has been registered under Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act and Section 113 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Gharinda in Amritsar Rural.
