AMRITSAR — The Counter-Intelligence wing of the Punjab Police achieved a major breakthrough on Tuesday by arresting two operatives linked to cross-border handlers and the banned terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). Law enforcement officials intercepted the suspects in Amritsar and recovered two live hand grenades from their possession, effectively thwarting a major subversion plot aimed at disrupting peace across the border state.

Acting on precise, classified intelligence regarding the movement of radicalized elements, a specialized police team set up a strategic checkpoint and intercepted a suspect identified as Ajay, a resident of Bazigar Mohalla in Ajnala, along with his accomplice. A thorough search of the duo led to the immediate recovery of the military-grade explosives, prompting senior security agencies and state intelligence units to go on high alert.

Preliminary interrogation of the arrested operatives revealed that the seized hand grenades were part of a larger institutional conspiracy orchestrated by foreign-based handlers. The suspects confessed that their immediate handlers had instructed them to target vital government infrastructure and state institutions in Punjab to incite panic, disrupt the prevailing law-and-order situation, and destabilize communal harmony. Senior police officials emphasized that timely tactical intervention by the Counter-Intelligence wing successfully preempted a catastrophic attack.

A formal criminal case has been registered against the accused at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) Police Station in Amritsar under Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) alongside Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act. Investigating officers stated that both suspects are being produced before a local court to secure their police remand for custodial interrogation. Investigators are currently scanning the financial trails and digital footprints of the accused to trace the wider network of local associates and identify the exact channels used to smuggle the explosives across the border.
