Polling for the urban local body elections was conducted earlier this week, covering 103 civic institutions, including eight municipal corporations, 75 municipal councils and 19 nagar panchayats. Election officials said the process of tabulating votes began simultaneously at designated counting centres in all districts.
More than 21 lakh voters participated in the elections, exercising their democratic rights to choose representatives for various urban local bodies. A total of 7,554 candidates are in the contest, with results expected to shape the political landscape in several towns and cities across Punjab.
State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhari stated that comprehensive arrangements had been put in place to ensure smooth and transparent counting procedures. According to officials, counting supervisors and assistants were deployed after a process of random selection conducted under the supervision of district election observers.
To strengthen monitoring, two micro-observers have been assigned to every counting venue. These officials will function under the direct oversight of district-level general observers and are expected to submit detailed reports on the proceedings. (Punjab Civic Poll Results 2026)
Authorities have also imposed strict access control measures at counting centres. Only authorised personnel, election officials and accredited representatives of candidates have been permitted entry inside the counting halls.
Security has been heightened around all counting locations as political parties and independent candidates await the outcome of the high-stakes urban elections.
