Chandigarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the flood-affected areas of Gurdaspur district tomorrow to assess the damage caused by recent heavy rains and overflowing rivers. During his visit, he is expected to review ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures and discuss further central assistance for the affected population.

Following his return from an overseas trip, PM Modi spoke with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the phone to get an update on the situation. BJP Punjab Legal Cell Convenor N.K. Verma said, “The Central Government has taken the suffering of the people of Punjab seriously from the very beginning. The people of Punjab will not be left alone in this hour of crisis. The Centre and BJP Punjab are providing all possible help.”

Official estimates indicate that nearly 2,000 villages and 4 lakh acres of farmland have been affected, with 46 lives lost and over 1.5 lakh residents displaced. Thousands of hectares of crops remain submerged, livestock has been lost, and many farmers are struggling with sand deposits in their fields.

Two central government teams have already surveyed the affected areas and will submit their report to the Prime Minister. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has also visited Punjab to extend support from the Centre.

Meanwhile, AAP leaders Aman Arora and Manish Sisodia criticized the Prime Minister’s visit, calling it “empty-handed.” In response, N.K. Verma alleged that the AAP government had misused central funds and failed to implement the Centre’s crop insurance scheme, leaving farmers vulnerable. He added, “The Prime Minister’s visit is a symbol of his concern for Punjabis. Unlike the AAP government, he stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Punjab.”

Verma also announced that BJP Punjab has launched Seva Pakhwada teams across districts to assist flood-affected families, with himself overseeing operations in Mohali. He asserted that the party is fully committed to helping the victims and added that Punjab will “teach a lesson to the AAP government in 2027.”
