Khanna: A devastating double suicide has stunned the residents of Boothgarh village near Khanna after a newly married couple ended their lives within twenty-four hours of each other. The deceased have been identified as thirty-one-year-old architect Gurkaramdeep Singh and his twenty-three-year-old wife, Jasmine Nagra, who had celebrated their wedding just four months prior. Initial police investigations indicate that severe mental harassment and financial extortion by an acquaintance pushed the young professional to take the fatal step, which subsequently triggered his wife’s fatal shock.
According to the formal criminal complaint lodged by the architect’s mother, Chhindarpal Kaur, a local married woman identified as Navjot Kaur, alias Deep, had been threatening the victim. The family stated that Gurkaramdeep had severed all ties with Navjot following his marriage to Jasmine. However, the accused allegedly refused to relent, continuously badgering the architect for financial payouts and threatening to register a fabricated sexual assault case against him to systematically ruin his domestic life. Distressed by the persistent intimidation, Gurkaramdeep consumed a lethal poisonous substance at his family home on Sunday.
The tragedy intensified the following day when Jasmine, unable to process the sudden trauma of her husband’s death, also consumed poison at the residence before the scheduled cremation ceremonies could commence. Although family members rushed her to a specialized hospital in Patiala, she succumbed during emergency treatment. Investigating Officer Assistant Sub-Inspector Charanjit Singh confirmed that the Sadar Khanna Police have registered a criminal case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, pertaining to the abetment of suicide, against Navjot Kaur, who has since gone into hiding. Police teams are executing regional raids to apprehend the fugitive while forensic experts await final post-mortem findings from the Civil Hospital in Khanna.
