Mohali: Mohali has earned national recognition for its push towards sustainable education, with 23 schools from the district selected for the prestigious National Green School Award. A majority of the shortlisted institutions are government-run, highlighting the growing emphasis on environmental responsibility within public schools.
The recognition follows the completion of the Green School Audit, carried out under the Environment Education Programme of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The initiative was implemented in partnership with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh, and the Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi.
According to district officials, the audit assessed schools on multiple parameters, including conservation of natural resources, waste segregation and management, efficient use of water and energy, and efforts to promote environmentally responsible habits among students.
District Coordinator for the Green School Programme, Khushwinder Kaur, said the results have now been formally announced, acknowledging schools that demonstrated consistent and innovative approaches to sustainability on their campuses.
District Education Officer (Secondary) Dr Ginni Duggal credited the achievement to teamwork at the grassroots level. She said the commitment shown by school principals, teachers, students and Eco-Clubs played a crucial role in meeting the required standards. The selected schools will be felicitated at a national ceremony scheduled to take place in New Delhi on January 30.
Among the institutions chosen are Government Senior Secondary School, Kurali; Government High School, Joula Kalan; Government High School, Karala; Government High School, Landran; Government High School, Mauli Baidwan; Government High School, Manakpur Sharif; and Gyan Jyot Global School. Several other government high and senior secondary schools from across Mohali’s urban and rural areas have also made the list, reflecting widespread participation in the programme.
Education officials said the achievement not only recognises existing efforts but also encourages schools to further integrate environmental awareness into everyday learning. With students actively involved in eco-friendly initiatives, the district hopes to build long-term awareness about sustainability and climate responsibility from a young age.
