Amritsar: Punjab’s Counter Intelligence unit has achieved a major breakthrough in Amritsar by dismantling an international drug trafficking network connected to Pakistan. Officers arrested an operative and seized 5 kg of heroin from his possession, marking a significant step in the state police’s ongoing crackdown on cross-border smuggling groups.

Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said the accused was acting on instructions from a Pakistan-based handler who coordinated the entire operation. The consignment was picked up from a pre-decided border point where it had been dropped earlier. The handler relayed locations and directions through WhatsApp and internet calls to keep the network hidden from enforcement agencies.

DGP Yadav said digital evidence, including phone data and chat records recovered from the accused, is being examined to trace both backward and forward links. He added that the aim is to completely dismantle the syndicate. An FIR under the NDPS Act has been registered at PS SSOC, Amritsar. Investigators are now probing the intended recipients and the wider supply chain connected to the seized consignment.

The DGP reaffirmed Punjab Police’s zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking, stating that making Punjab drug-free remains the top priority. He said more targeted operations will follow in the coming days to break the backbone of cross-border smuggling networks.
