Ludhiana: A case involving the reported disappearance of nine girls from different parts of Ludhiana within a span of 48 hours has prompted the Punjab State Women Commission to intervene, raising concerns over the safety of women and children in the city.
Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports on the matter, Punjab State Women Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill has directed authorities to launch an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the incidents.
Expressing serious concern over the reported disappearances, Gill said the safety and dignity of women and girls remain paramount and that the emergence of multiple missing cases in such a short period warrants urgent attention from law enforcement agencies.
The Commission has issued written directions to senior police officials in Ludhiana, instructing them to treat the matter as a priority. Given the sensitivity and seriousness of the case, it has specifically directed that the investigation be supervised by a senior police officer rather than junior officials.
The Ludhiana Police have also been asked to submit a detailed status report to the Commission by June 8, 2026. The report is expected to include information on the efforts made to trace the missing girls, progress achieved in the investigation, and any action taken against those found responsible.
Raj Lali Gill said the Commission is closely monitoring developments and expects swift, effective and transparent action from the police administration. She cautioned that any negligence, delay or failure in handling the matter would be viewed seriously and could result in action against the officials concerned.
The reported disappearances have generated anxiety among residents and parents, with many calling for intensified search operations and enhanced security measures across the city. Police have not yet released detailed information regarding the individual cases or whether the disappearances are connected.
Authorities are continuing their efforts to trace the missing girls as the investigation progresses.
