Harjot Bains Appears Before Sri Akal Takht Sahib Over Religious Event Controversy

Amritsar: Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Wednesday appeared before Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar, following a summons issued by the highest temporal seat of Sikh authority. Ahead of the appearance, the minister also paid respects at Gurdwara Guru Ka Mahal and proceeded on foot, barefoot, along Heritage Street to Sri Darbar Sahib, in keeping with Sikh tradition.

The summons stems from a recent incident during a martyrdom event organized by the state’s Language Department, where Punjabi singer Bir Singh performed religious songs. However, a portion of the program drew criticism after videos showed Bhangra being performed on stage during the spiritual gathering, an act considered inappropriate by many within the Sikh community, given the somber tone of the occasion.

In response to the backlash, both singer Bir Singh and Minister Harjot Bains issued apologies, acknowledging the sentiments of the Sikh Sangat. Despite the apologies, the matter was formally taken up by Sri Akal Takht Sahib, which called for the minister’s appearance.

A meeting of the five Singh Sahibans was scheduled this morning to deliberate on the issue and hear from the minister directly. The Education Minister’s visit to the holy shrine, marked by humility and protocol, has been seen as a sign of respect toward Sikh institutions.

No official statement has yet been released on the outcome of the meeting. However, the development underscores the importance of maintaining religious decorum at official events and the continuing authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib in guiding the Sikh community on such matters.
