Ludhiana: A routine night shift at the Ladhowal toll plaza in Ludhiana turned violent on Saturday when a group of men travelling in a car opened fire at toll workers after being asked to produce identification. No injuries were reported, but the dramatic incident, captured on CCTV, has sparked widespread concern about rising aggression at toll points.

According to toll staff, the confrontation began when the occupants of the vehicle attempted to pass through the VIP lane. One member of the group allegedly claimed he was the chairman of a government department. When employees requested proof of identity, the men became agitated and began firing at the workers.

Kuljit Singh, a toll employee present at the scene, said the car had approached from the Ludhiana side and was headed toward Phillaur. He estimated that seven to eight men were inside the vehicle. “They fired around five shots at us. We ducked and tried to stop them, but they sped off toward the South City bridge,” he recounted.

Workers said they attempted to chase the vehicle but were forced to retreat as the attackers continued threatening them. CCTV footage showing the group brandishing weapons and firing has circulated widely on social media, prompting public outrage.

Police rushed to the location soon after the incident was reported and have launched an investigation. Officers are reviewing the video evidence and checking nearby surveillance cameras along the suspected escape route.

Authorities said efforts are underway to identify the vehicle and trace the men involved. They added that strict action will be taken once the suspects are apprehended.

The incident has renewed calls for enhanced security and stricter enforcement at toll plazas, where workers often face harassment and intimidation from motorists attempting to bypass queues.
