Batala (Punjab)— Under heavy security, dreaded gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria was brought to Punjab from Silchar Jail in Assam and produced before the Batala Court on Thursday. The court granted the Punjab Police three-day custody to interrogate him further in connection with the Gora Baryar murder case.
Police teams escorted Bhagwanpuria from Silchar to Amritsar Airport late Wednesday night before transferring him to Batala. He has been taken into custody by the Batala Police for his alleged involvement in the killing of gangster Gurpreet Singh Gora, also known as Gora Baryar.
According to SP Gurdaspur Gurpratap Singh Sahota, an FIR (No. 89) was filed over the murder that took place on May 26, 2025, in Gurdaspur district. Gora Baryar, a resident of Baryar village, was shot dead while his associate, gangster Billa Mandiala, narrowly escaped. During the probe, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) arrested one accused, Nelson Masih, who admitted to working for the Bhagwanpuria gang. Although Gora Baryar had no direct link with the rival Bambiha gang, members of that group later issued an online threat to avenge his death.
The killing set off a series of retaliatory attacks that intensified the gang rivalry in Punjab. A month later, on June 26, 2025, Bhagwanpuria’s mother, Harjit Kaur (52), and her associate, Karanveer Singh (29), were shot dead by two assailants on motorcycles in Batala’s Urban Estate area. The Ghanshyampuria gang, reportedly allied with the Bambiha group, claimed responsibility, calling it revenge for Gora’s killing.
However, the Bambiha gang later issued a statement distancing itself from the murder, saying, “What happened to Mata Ji was wrong. Every mother is sacred. The target was only Karanveer.”
The gang violence escalated further on July 5, when Jagraj Singh alias Tota — a close aide of Bhagwanpuria and brother of Sidhu Moosewala case shooter Jagrup Rupa — was gunned down in broad daylight in Channaneke village, Amritsar. The Gopi Ghanshyampuria gang claimed responsibility for the hit.
Police sources said Bhagwanpuria’s remand was essential to question him about his suspected role in orchestrating the Gora Baryar murder, the subsequent chain of revenge killings, and his involvement in recent gang-related conspiracies across the state.
