Mohali (Punjab): Panic gripped the Mohali district court complex on Wednesday afternoon after an accused in the Gurlal Brar murder case was shot dead by unidentified assailants in a brazen daylight attack.
The deceased, identified as Gurvinder Singh alias Guri, a resident of Rurki Kham village, was targeted moments after stepping out of the court premises. He had arrived at the court along with his wife to attend a hearing in an NDPS-related case. Police said the attackers, who came on a motorcycle, fired multiple shots at close range before fleeing the scene.
Officials confirmed that at least 17 empty cartridges were recovered from the spot, indicating a well-planned and targeted attack. The victim died on the spot due to multiple gunshot wounds.
Following the incident, heavy police deployment was made in and around the court complex, and security was tightened across the district. Multiple checkpoints were set up to intercept the suspects, while CCTV footage from nearby areas is being scanned to trace their movement.
Gurvinder Singh was a key accused in the murder of Gurlal Brar, former president of the Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU), who was shot dead outside City Emporium Mall in Chandigarh on October 10, 2020. Gurlal Brar was also the cousin of Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar.
Police sources said preliminary investigations suggest the possibility of gang rivalry or revenge as the motive behind the killing. However, officials maintained that all angles are being examined. Further investigation is underway.
