Amritsar: Amid heavy rainfall in Punjab and neighboring Himachal Pradesh, Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti leader Sarwan Singh Pandher has raised an alarm over rising water levels in several districts of Punjab. Addressing the media, Pandher said that rivers in the region are overflowing, leading to flooding in fields and villages across Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Kapurthala, and Tarn Taran, with the Harike area being among the worst affected.

He urged the state government to take swift measures to evacuate residents stranded by floodwaters and to compensate farmers and villagers for their losses. Pandher called for the matter to be taken up in the Punjab Cabinet meeting scheduled for today.

The committee also renewed its demand for the withdrawal of the state’s land acquisition policy, pressing for a permanent end to the legislation through a resolution in the Punjab Assembly. To amplify their concerns, the group has announced a large-scale rally in Jalandhar on August 20.

In addition, the Samiti voiced strong opposition to the privatization of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, aligning itself with ongoing employee protests. Pandher expressed solidarity with Primary Teacher Recruitment (PRT) employees on strike, and criticized the practice of running private buses under the kilometer scheme. Instead, he urged the government to introduce new state-run buses and address workers’ grievances directly.

The committee’s latest statements come at a time when the state is grappling with both environmental and policy challenges, setting the stage for heightened political and social activity in the coming days.
