Chandigarh: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially commenced the third phase of its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a massive undertaking spanning sixteen states and three union territories. This strategic initiative aims to refine and update voter lists to ensure the integrity of the democratic process. Key regions such as Punjab, Delhi, and Chandigarh are central to this phase, which involves a comprehensive enumeration programme. However, the ECI has deferred the schedule for Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh due to the challenging weather conditions and snow-bound terrain in these northern regions, stating that their specific revision timelines will be announced once conditions improve.
The scale of this operation is significant, with over 394,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) deployed to conduct door-to-door visits across the country. These officers are tasked with reaching approximately 367.3 million electors to verify details and register new voters. To support this effort and maintain transparency, the ECI has integrated 342,000 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) nominated by various political parties into the process. This rigorous fieldwork is essential for creating an accurate and inclusive voter database, reflecting the current demographic landscape of the participating states and territories.
According to the schedule released by the poll body, the publication of the final electoral rolls will occur in several stages throughout the autumn. The first set of results will be released on September 6 for Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Manipur, followed by the union territory of Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli on September 11. Uttarakhand will see its final rolls published on September 15. A major update is scheduled for September 22, covering Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Voters in Punjab and Telangana will see their final lists on October 1, while the release for Karnataka, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi is slated for October 7. The revision cycle will conclude in late November, with Nagaland and Tripura releasing their lists on the 22nd and 23rd, respectively.
This revision process is particularly vital for Punjab and Delhi, where administrative bodies are focused on ensuring that every eligible citizen is correctly identified and registered. The staggered deadlines allow for thorough verification and address any discrepancies found during the enumeration phase.
