Amritsar: Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport at Rajasansi was temporarily shut late at night after a drone was spotted in the airport’s vicinity, prompting security agencies to invoke emergency measures and suspend operations for nearly an hour.
Due to the heightened security alert, a Malaysia Airlines flight arriving from Kuala Lumpur was diverted to Delhi. Similarly, an IndiGo flight scheduled to land from Sharjah around 9 pm was redirected to Chandigarh.
Confirming the incident, Airport Director Bhupinder Singh said a drone was sighted at approximately 8.40 pm. Keeping passenger safety as the top priority, airport authorities decided to completely suspend operations for about one hour, during which emergency protocols were enforced and incoming flights were diverted.
After a thorough inspection by security forces and the Punjab Police, the emergency was lifted and normal operations were gradually restored. The diverted flights were later cleared to resume their onward journey to Amritsar.
However, security arrangements at the airport have been further tightened to prevent any untoward incident. Domestic flights, which were temporarily halted during the alert, are currently operating with delays.
