Chandigarh: A severe cold wave has gripped large parts of the country, with temperatures dipping sharply across northern India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that rain in some regions will worsen conditions already impacted by the ongoing cold spell. Three states are under a rainfall alert, while 12 cities have been warned of dense fog. Authorities have urged people to exercise caution as temperatures in several cities may fall below 15°C, with minimum temperatures dropping to around 5°C or even lower.

Punjab and Chandigarh continue to reel under cold wave conditions triggered by icy winds blowing in from the mountains. Although the IMD has not issued a cold wave warning for today or tomorrow, a yellow alert has been declared for December 9 and 10 due to expected temperature drops.

Daytime Chill to Increase Until December 11

According to the IMD, maximum temperatures in the northern and eastern districts of Punjab are likely to remain between 20°C and 22°C until December 11. Other parts of the state may record daytime temperatures between 22°C and 24°C. Daytime temperatures this week are expected to stay slightly below normal across the state.

Northern districts such as Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Mohali, and Kapurthala, along with southern districts like Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala, Faridkot, Fazilka, Muktsar Sahib, Sangrur, and Malerkotla, are expected to record lower-than-usual temperatures. Night temperatures in these regions may fall to between 4°C and 6°C.
