Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced a fresh reward scheme for police personnel aimed at intensifying the state’s fight against drug trafficking. The new policy introduces monetary incentives and expanded investigative powers for officers involved in cases under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act.

According to the announcement, police officials who achieve major breakthroughs in drug cases will now be eligible for special rewards. An investigating officer who successfully recovers over 1 kilogram of heroin in a case will receive a reward of ₹1.2 lakh.

In another significant step, the government has authorized head constables to independently investigate NDPS cases, a responsibility previously limited to higher-ranking officers. This move, the Chief Minister said, will speed up investigations and strengthen the legal process.

Highlighting upcoming structural changes, Mann revealed that around 1,600 promotions will soon take place across different ranks in the Punjab Police. Once these internal promotions are processed, the department will open new recruitment opportunities, paving the way for fresh talent to join the force.

Mann emphasized that the state government is committed to eradicating the drug menace and ensuring a more effective law enforcement mechanism. “By rewarding officers for their dedication and widening the scope of investigation, we are sending a clear message: Punjab will not tolerate drug networks that destroy our youth,” he said.

The announcement has been welcomed within police circles, as the policy not only acknowledges the risks officers face during operations but also provides career growth opportunities alongside public recognition.
