Chandigarh: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia appeared before the Chandigarh District Court on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The appearance was in connection with a 2021 case involving an attempted “gherao” (protest surround) of the Punjab Chief Minister’s official residence.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 5, 2026.

Background of the Case

  • The Incident: In 2021, the SAD organized a large-scale protest in Chandigarh against rising inflation and various public grievances. During the demonstration, party workers attempted to march toward the Chief Minister’s residence.

  • Police Action: Clashes broke out between SAD supporters and the Chandigarh Police. Consequently, an FIR was registered against Majithia and several other party leaders for violating government prohibitory orders and obstructing public servants.

  • Legal Delay: Trial proceedings had been stalled for some time due to a stay order from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Recent Legal Developments

The trial resumed after the High Court recently vacated the stay. This development follows Majithia’s release on bail from the Supreme Court on February 2, 2026, in a separate, high-profile disproportionate assets (DA) case. In that matter, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau had alleged the laundering of nearly ₹540 crore linked to drug money.

Key details from the court appearance:

  • Personal Appearance: Majithia appeared in person following a summons for Tuesday.

  • Previous Exemption: He had requested a one-day exemption from his scheduled Monday appearance due to an urgent party meeting, which the court granted on the condition that he appear today.

  • Bail Status: While Majithia is currently out on bail in both the DA case and a 2021 NDPS (drugs) case, he is required to attend trial proceedings as directed by the respective courts.
