Amritsar: Panic gripped parts of the city late on Sunday night after gunfire erupted during a clash between two groups of youths on Loharka Road, leaving an 11th-class student seriously injured.

The injured youth has been identified as Aishpreet Singh, a Class 11 student, who sustained a bullet injury to his leg. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Amritsar, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Speaking to the media at the hospital, a police official said the incident had its roots in a dispute that began earlier at a school. A misunderstanding reportedly led to an altercation between students of Class 11 and Class 12. Following the initial clash, members of both groups later gathered on Loharka Road to attempt a compromise.

However, the situation escalated again, resulting in renewed arguments. During the confrontation, a youth identified as Harinder Singh, an associate of one of the parties, allegedly opened fire. One of the bullets struck Aishpreet Singh in the leg.

Police said preliminary information suggests that five to six rounds were fired at the spot. An investigation is underway to determine whether the weapon used in the firing was licensed.

Officials clarified that there is no confirmation of any firing from the opposite group. The injured student is currently not in a condition to record his statement. Police said appropriate legal action will be initiated once his statement is obtained.

Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
