Amritsar: A man described by police as a hardened criminal with suspected overseas connections was shot dead in an encounter on the outskirts of Amritsar late Wednesday night. The deceased has been identified as Harjinder Singh, widely known as “Harry,” who officials claim maintained ties with foreign-based gangsters and elements operating from across the border in Pakistan.

Police said Harry had been released on bail only recently and was under surveillance due to intelligence inputs indicating his involvement in planned violent activities. His associate, a man named Sunny from Attari, managed to escape during the shootout, using the surrounding fields and lack of visibility to slip away.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the anti-gangster unit had received information that the duo was preparing for a targeted killing within the city. Acting on the tip-off, officers moved to intercept them, leading to a brief but intense exchange of fire that resulted in Harry’s death.

At the spot, investigators recovered two firearms believed to have been smuggled from Pakistan — a 9mm Glock pistol and a .30-bore weapon. A motorcycle and a mobile phone were also seized for forensic examination.

Bhullar said multiple teams are now searching for the absconding suspect and investigating whether the weapons and planned killing were part of a larger criminal network operating with cross-border support.
