Amritsar: In the early hours of Monday, a fierce encounter broke out between police and two gangsters near Raiya Canal in Amritsar. The police action left one suspect dead and another arrested, while a police officer also sustained injuries during the clash.
According to authorities, the police had received a tip-off about the presence of two suspects involved in a recent murder case near Raiya Canal. When the officers attempted to intercept them, the suspects tried to flee on a motorcycle and fired at the police. The police responded with gunfire, critically injuring both men.
The seriously wounded suspect, identified as Raja Billa from Tarn Taran, was rushed to Amritsar Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The second suspect, a resident of Krishna Nagar in Amritsar, was apprehended at the scene.
The police confirmed that the two were wanted in connection with a recent murder in Dhoolka village. The incident involved the shooting of a shopkeeper over a ₹50 lakh ransom demand. Following the crime, police had been conducting continuous searches and maintaining roadblocks in the area to capture the culprits.
DIG Border Range Sandeep Goyal said, “Police will take strict action against all criminals. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands. We will soon apprehend other members of this gang.”
