Amritsar: A transport worker was fatally shot at an Amritsar bus stand on Tuesday morning following a dispute over passenger boarding, police said. The victim, identified as Makhan, an employee of Kahlon Bus, was struck by four bullets and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The incident also left a nearby shopkeeper injured, and authorities recovered six bullet shells from the area. Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the attacker, who fled immediately after the shooting.
Eyewitnesses reported that tensions had been escalating between employees of two private bus operators over who would board passengers first. The argument reportedly turned violent when one of the parties drew a firearm and opened fire.
ACP Gagandeep said law enforcement was promptly alerted to the incident and quickly secured the bus stand for investigation. “The dispute appears to have arisen over bus timings and passenger pickup priority. We are examining all leads and intensifying the search for the accused,” he added.
Passengers at the stand panicked as shots rang out, prompting an immediate police response. Authorities are questioning witnesses and reviewing available surveillance footage to reconstruct the events leading up to the attack.
The police have urged anyone with information about the suspect or the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.
