Hoshiarpur: The Hoshiarpur Cyber Cell on Sunday arrested Rajinder Parmar, office in-charge of former Punjab minister Sunder Sham Arora, for allegedly creating fake Facebook accounts to post defamatory content against MLA Brahm Shankar Jimpa and his family.
The arrest followed a complaint by the MLA’s nephew, Dheeraj Sharma, who reported that unidentified individuals were using fabricated profiles to circulate objectionable remarks and false allegations online. Cyber Cell officials sought technical information from Facebook and, after analysing the digital trail, traced the activity to Parmar.
Police recovered the mobile phone believed to have been used to operate the fake profiles.
Sharma said he had submitted two complaints—one last year and another recently—identifying two suspicious accounts. The account ‘Raja Thakur’ showed fluctuating locations, appearing at times in Brampton, Canada, and at others in Hoshiarpur. Another profile, ‘Rab Kolon Dar Sajjana,’ listed Kapurthala as its location.
According to police sources, Parmar suggested during questioning that he had been acting on the instructions of a “big name,” though investigators have not disclosed further details. The probe to identify all individuals involved remains underway.
