Patiala: Polling for the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections continued smoothly across Punjab on Sunday, with a 92-year-old woman in Patiala block drawing attention for exercising her right to vote despite her advanced age.
Election officials said the senior citizen arrived at her polling station with assistance and cast her ballot peacefully, reflecting strong civic participation at the grassroots level. Her presence was seen as a reminder of the importance of democratic involvement across generations.
By around 10 am, nearly two hours after voting began, authorities reported a calm atmosphere across polling centres with no incidents of disruption or violence. Voters were seen queuing in an orderly manner at several locations as the election process progressed.
The elections are being held to fill 357 seats across 23 Zila Parishads and 2,863 positions in 154 Block Samitis. To ensure free and fair polling, extensive security and administrative arrangements have been made throughout the state.
According to officials, approximately 44,000 security personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order, while around 93,000 election staff are overseeing the voting process at various polling stations.
State election authorities expressed confidence that the polls would continue peacefully and urged voters to participate actively in strengthening local self-governance.
