New Delhi: The opposition’s INDIA alliance on Monday announced former Supreme Court judge Justice B. Sudershan Reddy as its joint nominee for the post of Vice President of India, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest later this month.

The announcement was made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who emphasized that the choice reflected the bloc’s ideological stand. “This vice-presidential contest is not just about numbers; it is an ideological battle,” Kharge said, adding that all parties within the alliance unanimously endorsed Justice Reddy’s candidature.

Kharge hailed Justice Reddy as “one of India’s most distinguished and progressive jurists,” noting his extensive legal career that included serving as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and later as a judge of the Supreme Court of India.

Highlighting Reddy’s judicial philosophy, Kharge said, “He has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic and political justice. His judgments reflect a deep concern for the poor, the marginalized, and the protection of constitutional values.”

The INDIA bloc’s decision comes at a crucial juncture, as the Vice Presidential election is expected to test the strength and unity of the opposition against the ruling NDA. While the outcome may depend on arithmetic in Parliament, opposition leaders underscored that their choice symbolizes a commitment to constitutional values and inclusivity.

Justice Reddy, known for his forthright views during his tenure on the Supreme Court bench, is expected to bring both experience and credibility to the contest.

The election for the Vice President of India is scheduled to take place later this month, with the winner set to succeed the incumbent and serve as the ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
