Ropar: A shocking murder linked to an old enmity has rattled Punjab’s Ropar district after a young man was shot dead in the Nurpur Bedi area, while the alleged attacker later surfaced online claiming responsibility for the killing.
The victim, identified as Harmol Singh Sidhu of Shahpur Bela village, was reportedly the only son of his parents. Sources said he had recently secured bail after spending nearly four years in prison in connection with a previous murder case.
The incident took place on Sunday evening in the village market, where Harjot Singh Sidhu, also from Shahpur Bela, allegedly opened fire on Harmol Singh. He died at the scene before help could arrive.
Soon after the shooting, the accused allegedly posted a video on social media, admitting to the act. In the recording, he claimed the murder was carried out to avenge his brother’s death, alleging that Harmol Singh had killed his sibling around four years ago.
Harjot further stated that Harmol’s release from jail had led to repeated threats against him and his family, which he claimed pushed him to commit the crime. He also insisted that no one else should be implicated in the matter.
Confirming the case, Anandpur Sahib DSP Jashandeep Singh Mann said police have registered a murder case and multiple teams are working to arrest the suspect. He added that further investigation is underway to establish all circumstances surrounding the killing.
The broad daylight murder has sparked fear and tension in Shahpur Bela, with local residents expressing disbelief over the violent fallout of a long-standing rivalry.
