Lebanon: The conflict engulfing West Asia intensified dramatically on Monday as Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon left at least 31 people dead and 149 others injured, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. The strikes followed a missile assault by Hezbollah on Israeli territory, marking a dangerous expansion of hostilities across the region.
Lebanese authorities reported that nearly two-thirds of those killed were from southern parts of the country, an area that has repeatedly witnessed cross-border exchanges. The retaliatory bombardment came hours after Hezbollah launched missiles into Israel, describing the action as a response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader and what it termed ongoing Israeli aggression. Israeli officials stated that one projectile was intercepted, while others landed in open areas, with no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.
The latest escalation unfolds against the backdrop of a widening regional war that began after the United States and Israel initiated coordinated strikes on Iranian military infrastructure. Those operations reportedly targeted missile facilities and naval assets, with Israeli authorities claiming that key Iranian military sites, including naval headquarters and several warships, were destroyed. Iranian officials have stated that more than 200 people have died since the start of the attacks.
In Lebanon, Israeli jets struck multiple locations, including areas in Beirut, prompting evacuation warnings for residents of nearly 50 villages in eastern and southern districts. Panic spread as families fled their homes fearing further bombardment.
Tensions are not confined to Lebanon and Israel. In Iraq, a militia aligned with Tehran claimed responsibility for a drone strike aimed at American troops stationed at Baghdad International Airport. The group had earlier said it launched an attack on a US military base in Irbil. Separately, Cyprus reported that a British military base on the island was targeted by a drone.
As violence rippled across the Gulf, Kuwait came under attack, prompting the United States to issue an urgent advisory to American citizens in the country. The US Embassy directed nationals to remain indoors and avoid visiting diplomatic premises, though specific details were not disclosed.
Iran has continued to launch missiles toward Israel and other regional locations as part of its counteroffensive. Senior Iranian security official Ali Larijani declared on social media that Tehran would not engage in negotiations with Washington, signaling a hardening stance.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump vowed a strong response following the deaths of three American troops in Kuwait, asserting that Washington would retaliate decisively. Gulf nations have also warned of potential action against Iran after strikes reportedly hit key installations and resulted in civilian casualties.
With multiple fronts now active and diplomatic channels strained, fears are mounting that the crisis could spiral into a broader regional confrontation, drawing in more state and non-state actors in the days ahead.
