Chandigarh: A severe spell of summer heat has tightened its grip over Punjab and Chandigarh, with temperatures soaring past the 40°C mark in several districts and prompting weather authorities to issue a heatwave alert.

According to meteorological officials, more than ten districts in Punjab recorded temperatures above 40°C, with Bathinda emerging as the hottest location at a blistering 44°C—well above the seasonal average and the highest recorded so far this year.

Other regions also experienced extreme conditions, with places like Faridkot, Patiala, and Ludhiana reporting temperatures crossing the 40°C threshold. Several additional districts recorded readings between 35°C and 40°C, indicating widespread heat stress across the state.

In response, the Meteorological Centre has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for heatwave conditions, warning residents of potentially hazardous weather over the next couple of days. Officials have also cautioned about “warm night” conditions in Chandigarh, which could add to public discomfort.

Health authorities have advised people to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

However, some relief may be on the horizon. Weather experts have predicted a shift in conditions from April 26 onwards, with the possibility of rain and thunderstorms across parts of the region. This change is expected to bring down temperatures slightly and provide respite from the ongoing heatwave.

Until then, authorities continue to urge vigilance as the region copes with one of the most intense heat spells of the season.
