Chandigarh: The Haryana government on Saturday transferred Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya, days after the alleged suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, whose death has sparked controversy and demands for accountability.
The transfer comes amid growing pressure from the family of the late officer, who has accused several senior officials of serious misconduct. A handwritten note reportedly left by Kumar before his death accused eight senior police officers, including SP Bijarniya, of caste-based discrimination, mental harassment, and public humiliation.
According to an official order issued by the state government, IPS officer Surinder Singh Bhoria will take over as the new SP of Rohtak. Bijarniya’s new posting has not yet been announced.
The note left behind by Kumar has become a focal point in the ongoing investigation and public discourse, as it outlines alleged systemic harassment within the police department, particularly along caste lines. The family has been vocal in demanding action against those named, urging the government to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry.
Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found dead in his Chandigarh residence earlier this week, in what authorities have described as a suicide. The incident triggered a wave of grief and outrage, especially within the police fraternity and civil society.
The transfer of Bijarniya is being seen as the first major administrative response to the allegations, though officials have not directly linked the move to the contents of the suicide note. The Haryana government has yet to announce whether further disciplinary or legal action will follow against the officers named by Kumar.
A formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death is ongoing. The state police leadership has assured that the matter will be handled with the seriousness and sensitivity it deserves.
