Rain Likely in Parts of Punjab Today; Monsoon to Withdraw in Three Days

Chandigarh: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate showers across several districts of Punjab on Thursday, bringing a brief respite from the sultry weather. According to the forecast, districts including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, and Mohali could experience scattered rainfall. At the same time, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala are expected to see light rain or drizzle.

The rains are expected to help reduce humidity and provide relief to residents. The weather bureau noted that, along with rainfall, gusty winds may accompany showers in certain places. The monsoon, which has been gradually retreating, is set to completely withdraw from Punjab by September 20, with moderate showers likely over some central districts before it exits the state. In the last 24 hours, Pathankot recorded 32 mm of rainfall.

Temperature and Humidity Trends

Maximum temperatures remained high in a few regions, with Mansa registering the hottest at 37.1°C. Pathankot, meanwhile, recorded a minimum of 24.8°C. Officials said rain activity over the next couple of days will bring down daytime temperatures slightly and ease the prevailing muggy conditions. Importantly, the IMD clarified that no warning for heavy downpour or storms has been issued at present.

River Levels Easing, Normalcy Returning

With rainfall reducing in the hills, rivers in Punjab have seen a steady drop in water levels, improving the situation in flood-affected belts. The state government’s ongoing sanitation and rehabilitation campaign, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, continues in villages to restore normalcy.

The brief spell of rain is expected to benefit farmers preparing their fields, even as the state prepares to bid farewell to this year’s monsoon.
