Toronto: A 45-year-old Punjabi-origin social media influencer was fatally stabbed in Canada’s Ontario province earlier this week, prompting a police investigation as authorities examine claims circulating online about a possible motive behind the killing.
The victim, Nancy Grewal, was attacked shortly before 9:30 pm on March 3 near Todd Lane in LaSalle, located in Essex County. Officers from the LaSalle Police Service responded to reports of a stabbing and found Grewal critically injured at the scene. Despite emergency efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities confirmed the incident in a statement, adding that investigators are reviewing all available evidence but have not yet disclosed details about possible suspects. No arrests have been made so far.
According to a report by CBC News, a social media account posted a message in Punjabi claiming responsibility for the killing and suggesting the attack was linked to Grewal’s criticism of the Khalistan movement. The post reportedly included her photograph and a caption indicating that she was targeted for her outspoken views against the separatist campaign for a Sikh homeland.
However, the report noted that the authenticity of the social media account and the claims made in the message have not been independently verified.
Police officials have not confirmed any connection between the online post and the stabbing. Investigators said they are examining various angles while refraining from releasing further information to avoid affecting the ongoing probe. According to media reports, authorities believe the attack may have been targeted rather than random.
Originally from Ludhiana, Grewal later settled in Canada and had built a presence on social media platforms where she frequently discussed social and political issues affecting Punjabi communities both locally and abroad. She was particularly known for her vocal opposition to the Khalistan movement.
Family members said Grewal had previously received threats due to her views. Her mother, Shinderpal Kaur, told media outlets that her daughter had faced hostility from certain individuals who disagreed with her opinions and had expressed concerns about her safety.
The incident has sparked concern within the local community, with calls for a thorough investigation and swift justice. Police have urged anyone with information related to the case to contact authorities as they continue to examine leads and possible motives behind the killing.
