Chandigarh: Punjab is set for another spell of intense monsoon activity, with the Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rain at several places on August 17 and 18. While most parts of the state may receive light to moderate showers, isolated areas could witness heavier downpours accompanied by thunderstorms and overcast conditions.

The latest forecast suggests that the weather system will gradually weaken after August 18. From August 19 to 22, scattered rainfall may continue in parts of Punjab, but no fresh weather warning has been issued for this period.

Amritsar records highest rainfall

Rainfall was reported from several parts of Punjab during the past 24 hours. Amritsar received the highest rainfall at 40.1 mm, followed by Jalandhar with 14 mm and Rupnagar with 13 mm.

Pathankot recorded 4 mm of rain, while Patiala received 3.4 mm. Ludhiana and Mohali recorded 2.8 mm and 2 mm, respectively. Chandigarh received only trace rainfall during the period.

Temperature remains above normal

Despite the showers, Punjab’s average maximum temperature increased by 1.1°C compared with the previous day. The state’s average maximum temperature remained around 1.7°C above normal.

Bathinda recorded the highest temperature at 36.5°C, making it the hottest location in the state. Rupnagar recorded 36.3°C, while Patiala and Ferozepur touched 36.1°C. Faridkot registered a maximum temperature of 36°C.

Amritsar, meanwhile, recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 22.9°C.

Chandigarh likely to remain cloudy

Chandigarh is expected to remain largely cloudy during the next few days, with rain or thunderstorms possible at intervals.

The city could record a maximum temperature of around 34°C and a minimum of 25°C on August 17. On August 18, the maximum may fall to around 32°C, while the minimum is expected to remain near 24°C.

Similar conditions are likely in Mohali, where daytime temperatures are expected to remain between 32°C and 34°C.

Rainfall activity likely to ease after August 18

The current weather pattern is expected to bring the most significant rainfall activity during the next two days. After that, the intensity is likely to decline, although isolated showers cannot be ruled out through August 22.

With thunderstorms and heavy rain possible in some areas, residents are advised to remain cautious during intense spells, particularly while travelling or staying in areas vulnerable to waterlogging.
