Chandigarh: The Punjab Police has issued new directives to all personnel involved in VIP protection duties following a controversial incident on the Zirakpur-Ambala stretch that sparked public outrage.

The controversy erupted on Wednesday when Lt Gen D.S. Hooda (Retd), former Northern Army Commander, alleged that a Punjab Police escort vehicle deliberately hit his car while escorting a VIP convoy towards Ambala. According to Lt Gen Hooda, the incident occurred around 4 pm as he was driving with his wife. Two police jeeps, part of the VIP convoy, approached from behind with sirens blaring. Hooda slowed down to let the first vehicle pass, but the convoy’s rear escort vehicle allegedly became impatient due to a brief delay caused by heavy traffic.

The incident has raised concerns over misuse of power and reckless driving by VIP convoys, prompting the Punjab Police to reiterate the importance of discipline and public safety.

Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav emphasized that VIP protection is a high-responsibility duty, requiring officers to combine security with respect for public dignity and road safety. “Our strength lies not only in safeguarding VIPs but also in maintaining public trust,” he said.

The department’s updated directives include:

  • Strict adherence to traffic rules during non-emergency movements.

  • Ensuring smooth convoy movement while minimizing disruption to public traffic.

  • Maintaining professional conduct and courtesy at all times, with patience and restraint in challenging situations.

  • Prompt reporting of incidents to the concerned authorities by the escort in-charge.

  • Mandatory briefings within 48 hours across all districts for escort, pilot, and traffic staff to reinforce professional and respectful behavior on roads.

The police stressed that the guidelines aim to balance VIP security requirements with the rights and safety of ordinary citizens, reinforcing professionalism and accountability in all escort operations.

This move comes amid heightened scrutiny of VIP convoy protocols and reflects the force’s commitment to preventing misuse of authority and ensuring public confidence.
