Amritsar: In a significant operation against organised crime, the Counter Intelligence unit of Amritsar has busted a major smuggling network involved in trafficking narcotics and illegal weapons across Punjab. Two individuals linked to the module have been arrested, while a substantial cache of heroin, firearms and ammunition has been recovered from their possession.

Officials said the operation led to the seizure of 5.5 kilograms of heroin, four pistols and ten live cartridges. The recovery is being seen as a major success in Punjab Police’s ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking and cross-border criminal activities.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were allegedly in direct contact with a cross-border smuggler. Police suspect the arrested men had recently received consignments of illegal arms and ammunition, which were meant to be supplied further within different parts of Punjab.

Sources within the investigation stated that the smuggling route appears to be part of a wider network operating with handlers based across the border. The weapons and narcotics were reportedly intended to strengthen criminal activities and distribution channels in the state.

A case has been registered at Police Station State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), Amritsar. Investigators are now working to trace both the backward and forward links of the racket to identify key suppliers, local distributors and other associates who may be connected to the operation.

Punjab Police officials have said that further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses and more details about the network emerge.

Reiterating its firm stand against organised crime, Punjab Police said it remains committed to its zero-tolerance campaign against drugs, illegal weapons and criminal syndicates attempting to destabilise peace in the state.

The latest breakthrough comes as security agencies continue to intensify surveillance along vulnerable routes to curb cross-border smuggling attempts and dismantle criminal networks operating in Punjab.
