Punjab Faces Fuel Shortage as Petrol Pumps Report Dry Stocks Across State

Chandigarh: Punjab is grappling with a growing fuel supply crunch, with petrol and diesel shortages being reported from several districts as retail outlets struggle to replenish stocks on time. The disruption has triggered long queues at filling stations and widespread concern among commuters, transporters and businesses dependent on regular fuel availability.

The Petrol Pump Dealers Association of Punjab has formally raised the issue with the state’s Chief Secretary, blaming public sector oil marketing companies for failing to ensure smooth and timely delivery of fuel consignments. Dealers claim the supply chain disruption has left multiple outlets with critically low reserves, while some pumps have temporarily exhausted their stock entirely.

According to industry representatives, the situation is more severe at outlets operated by Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum, while Indian Oil pumps are comparatively less affected. Dealers have also alleged that some suppliers are insisting they purchase premium-grade petrol—priced nearly Rs 10 higher per litre—before releasing regular fuel supplies, further aggravating operational stress.

The crisis comes amid rising global crude oil instability linked to escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which has tightened international supply flows. At the same time, recent price hikes in petrol and diesel have already added financial pressure on consumers and businesses across the state.

Paramjit Singh, president of the state pump dealers’ body, said the shortage is no longer isolated to select cities but has spread across Punjab, affecting fuel accessibility on a wider scale. He warned that unless supplies are restored immediately, the disruption could intensify further in the coming days.

Apart from liquid fuels, reports of LPG shortages have also surfaced, affecting industries and commercial users. Many establishments dependent on uninterrupted gas supply have reportedly been forced to cut operations or seek alternatives.

With public anxiety growing and fuel demand remaining high, calls are mounting for urgent government intervention to stabilise supply lines and prevent the shortage from worsening across Punjab.
