Sydney: A community in Sydney’s north is reeling after the death of an eight-month-pregnant Indian woman who was struck and fatally injured during an evening walk with her family.
The woman, identified as 33-year-old Samanvitha Dhareshwar, had stepped out with her husband and young son on Friday night when tragedy unfolded on George Street in Hornsby, according to New South Wales Police.
Investigators say a Kia Carnival had slowed at the entrance of a car park around 8 pm, giving the family space to cross. Moments later, a BMW travelling at high speed crashed into the back of the Kia. The impact propelled the Kia forward, hitting Dhareshwar as she walked past the driveway.
Emergency crews rushed her to Westmead Hospital, where doctors fought to save her and her unborn baby. Both died from the severity of the injuries. Police have not detailed whether her husband or three-year-old son suffered any harm.
Dhareshwar, an IT professional whose online profile lists experience in systems analysis and application support, had been working as a test analyst with Alsco Uniforms.
The BMW’s driver, 19-year-old P-plater Aaron Papazoglu, was arrested later at his Wahroonga home. He faces several serious charges, including dangerous driving causing death, negligent driving causing death, and causing the loss of a foetus. A local court magistrate refused him bail, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the potential risk to the public.
The prosecution is expected to proceed under Zoe’s Law, a New South Wales statute introduced in 2022. The law recognises the unlawful death of an unborn child and allows courts to impose additional penalties—up to three extra years in cases involving dangerous or negligent driving.
Residents in Hornsby have left flowers near the site of the crash, and friends have described Dhareshwar as a dedicated professional and a loving mother who was eagerly awaiting the birth of her second child. Police continue to appeal for dashcam footage or additional witnesses as the investigation progresses.
