Srinagar: A Pakistani militant was killed after security forces foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Sunday.

According to the Indian Army, the operation was carried out jointly with the Jammu and Kashmir Police after intelligence inputs indicated a possible attempt by militants to cross into Indian territory.

The Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said the operation was launched during the night of March 14–15 in the Buchhar area of the Uri sector.

Troops conducting surveillance reportedly detected suspicious movement in a densely wooded area and set up an ambush. When the suspected militant was challenged by security personnel, he allegedly opened indiscriminate fire, triggering a brief gunfight.

During the exchange, the infiltrator was shot dead by the security forces. Officials said the slain militant was believed to be from Pakistan.

Security forces also recovered weapons and other items from the site, including an AK-series rifle, pistols and a large quantity of ammunition.

The search operation in the surrounding area was continuing at the time of the latest reports as forces worked to ensure that no additional militants had crossed the border.
