CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday directed all Deputy Commissioners to complete flood protection works within a fixed deadline, warning of personal accountability in case of lapses. Chairing a high-level review meeting ahead of the monsoon season, he ordered urgent desilting of drains and vulnerable points, along with fast-tracking anti-pollution measures and pending water infrastructure projects to prevent flood-like situations across the state.

Accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, the Chief Minister stressed the need for foolproof planning and coordination with irrigation department engineers for regular cleaning and strengthening of drains and rivers. He reviewed the ongoing cleaning of Buddha Nullah and directed strict action to stop dairy waste from entering the water body, asking municipal authorities to ensure proper waste management.

Reviewing infrastructure and pollution control measures, Mann instructed officials to expedite projects such as CBG plants and ensure proper treatment of industrial effluents. He also called for strengthening embankments along the Sutlej River and improving water flow in key drains and canals. Reaffirming his government’s commitment, the Chief Minister said the “people’s government” stands firmly with citizens and will ensure visible improvements in the coming days.
